Fodera was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 1983 by Vinny Fodera and Joey Lauricella. Vinny Fodera is also known as Stewart Spector's very first student, and from the late 70s to early 80s, he worked alongside Ken Smith to create Bass. Fodera basses are beloved by legendary bassists including Victor Wooten, Anthony Jackson, Felix Pastorius, and many others. Fodera basses are fundamentally fully customizable, consistently delivering the highest quality to meet the player's exact specifications.
This 1985 model possesses a distinctly handmade character, setting it apart from current production models. The body top is spalted beech, while the back features ash and bird's-eye maple. The neck is 5-piece maple with a rosewood fingerboard.
The original pickup was a Bartolini 9S, but this unit has been modified to a soapbar type, requiring an expanded pickup cavity. The preamp has also been upgraded to the latest Fodera model, the Fodera x Trickfish Preamp v.4. Controls include Volume/Tone/Balance/3-Band EQ/(Active/Passive) Switch/Coil Tap Switch.
Sound-wise, it offers fast attack and excellent picking nuance while retaining a woody, organic feel. It delivers a thick, punchy sound distinct from the delicate tones of modern high-end instruments, making it blend exceptionally well in an ensemble.
If you're just looking for a "sound that blends into an ensemble," there are plenty of other options. However, this particular instrument possesses the precision and presence characteristic of high-end gear, such as excellent separation due to its fast response. While the pickups and preamp aren't the original parts from its era, I truly felt the unique character that only a vintage Fodera can deliver is alive and well.
Though it's a rare vintage high-end Bass that's hard to come by today, what matters is its potential as a tool. "A Bass you'll want to keep playing forever." That's the answer.
