Showa-era Headway 000-28 Type
"Headway" was established in 1977 in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, by bringing together several master craftsmen, including Mr. Yasuo Momose, who had made a name for himself as a guitar luthier at Hayashi Woodworking Shop. The company suspended acoustic guitar production around 1983 due to a factory fire. Although it resumed operations in the 2000s, the instruments produced from 1977 through the early 1980s—referred to by enthusiasts as "Showa Headway"—are highly regarded and prized.
This instrument is the HF-415 from the 400 Series (000-28), which was added to the lineup in the late 1980s; it features an all-solid-wood construction with a spruce top and rosewood sides and back.The neck is made of mahogany, while the fingerboard and bridge are ebony. It features herringbone trim and the so-called “zigzag” backstrip, and is equipped with waffle-back-style tuners (GP-5N). Although it is a 000-28 type, it is characterized by its rounded headstock and Guild-style pickguard.
The X-bracing is the non-scalloped X-bracing characteristic of early models, and combined with the thicker body, it produces a bright tone. While it may lack the delicacy of scalloped bracing, the guitar feels very solidly built and produces a powerful resonance when played with full strumming. The neck profile is a soft V-shape with just the right amount of thickness, providing a secure grip.
Once you play it, you’ll realize this is a truly charming instrument that, while sharing similarities with modern Headway models, also lets you appreciate the character of a vintage guitar.
