Martin / 1979 D-18
The current D-18 is well made.
The sound and response are nicely integrated, and it is an honor student for any player.
But if you have ever felt that there is something missing there, maybe you are looking for the rawness of the instrument itself, like a roughness or earthiness.
This 1979 D-18 has that feel.
This is one of the so-called "vintage" pieces from the mid-term period. The wood has dried out well, and the sound profile has rounded out a bit, but the core remains, and the way the overtones come out and the way the air shakes has developed a unique depth.
The fine weather checks carved on the top are not mere signs of aging, but proof of the guitar's long history.
Some modern guitars have models with similar processing, but what you see here is the realistic character of age.
This is not only visually beautiful, but also gives a natural sense that the instrument is alive.
For those who seek a texture that cannot be obtained from something new.
Because the D-18 is a standard model, it is interesting to focus on the individual differences from period to period.
