Ovation / 1978 Super Adamas 1687-7
“How can we maximize the vibration of an acoustic guitar’s body?”
Ovation’s answer to that question was “Adamas.”
Seeking durability and acoustic properties unattainable with a wooden top, Ovation used carbon fiber—originally developed for aerospace technology—for the top, encasing it within a unique fan bracing structure and a Lyra-Code body.
The Super Adamas 1687 truly embodies that innovation.
The model we’re featuring today is a 1978 Super Adamas 1687-7 Beige from the early production run. It’s one of the rarest Adamas guitars
still in existence, hailing from a particularly scarce era.
First and foremost, you’ll be captivated by its appearance. It possesses a beauty reminiscent of new buds glistening in the
spring sunlight.
Although it’s difficult to discern from the photos, you can still make out the abundance of glitter—a hallmark of the early models.
Its presence exudes not flashiness, but a sense of solemn grandeur, radiating a charm that transcends the boundaries of a mere guitar to become a true work of art.
And then, the sound.
Even with just a light strum of a chord, you’ll feel as if the space around you is gently lifted.
The low end resonates deeply, causing the body to vibrate, while the high end is delicate yet possesses a clarity that reaches every corner of the room.
The sound seems to well up from within.
Anyone playing this guitar for the first time will likely be amazed by its three-dimensional quality.
Furthermore, its tonal character is distinctly different from that of the later Super Adamas models.
The secret to this sound lies in the top, which consists of layers of carbon graphite and birch. Thanks to the responsiveness of this ultra-thin top—something that could never be achieved with solid
wood alone—the nuances of your picking are directly translated into sound.
Back then, many artists, including Kousetsu Minami and Chiharu Matsuyama, favored the Adamas, bringing a breath of fresh air to the guitar industry of the time.
