Martin / 1977 HD-28
What is the "H" in HD-28 and what makes it different from the D-28?
The HD-28 was produced by Martin in 1976 as a reissue of the prewar D-28.
In the 1970s, the reputation of the prewar Martin became very high, and this led to the reissue of the HD-28.
In fact, the specifications of the D-28 that was first produced in 1931 are different from those of the D-28 reissued today.

-Herringbone trim
The D-28s from 1931 to 1947, known as "pre-war" D-28s, have specifications that are absolutely indispensable for the production of HD-28s.
That is the Herringbone, which stands for the H in HD-28.
Herringbone = herring bone, and is a V-shaped decoration along the edge of the spruce body.
It is called herringbone because it looks like a herring bone.
D-28s made after '47 use a white and black multi-stripe trim.

The sides and back are made of beautifully grained quarter-sawn Indian rosewood, showing a yellowish color.
The secret to its warm sound is the benefit of this wood.

Ebony is used for the fingerboard and bridge.
The saddle is different between the prewar Martin and the HD-28. The prewar Martin had a long saddle, but the HD-28 has a short saddle.
The prewar version has a long saddle, while the HD-28 has a short saddle. This shows Martin's strong belief that the herringbone trim was more important than on the prewar Martin.
The HD-28V, which appeared around 1990, has a long saddle, which is closer to the prewar Martin.

The HD-28V features non-scalloped X-bracing, which gives the instrument a well-balanced tone with power and a gorgeous breadth of sound.
It is interesting to note the difference in the way the sound jumps and spreads compared to the D-28.
The mahogany neck is gently V-shaped.
However, it feels less like a V and more like a rounded C shape.
Therefore, even those who are not comfortable with V-shapes can play this guitar without any discomfort.

The tuning machine is a GROVER Mirotomatic peg.
The prewar model uses GROVER's open-back "butter bean" knobs, but we think this is a specification that makes use of the D-28 style of the 70's.

The head has rounded corners with a classic logo decal.
Not only the body but also the head has an austere look.

We hope you could feel the difference between the D-28 and the HD-28 just here.
Moreover, as explained at the beginning of this article, the HD-28 was produced in 1976, and this model was made in 1977, which means that it is an early model. And this model was made in 1977, so you can understand that it was made in the early stage.
Nowadays, there are many reissued models, but this model is one of the first and rare ones, isn't it?
