Gibson / 1970 J-180 Everly Brothers
[Demo Video]
Unraveling the 1969-1970 Specification Changes
Compared to the 1969 J-180 Everly Brothers, the three differences are the finish on the back of the headstock, the volute at the headstock base, and the bridge plate.
Color-wise, the 1969 model features a walnut finish, while the 1970 model is finished in black. In fact, some 1969 models also feature a black-painted headstock back, indicating that specifications changed between 1969 and 1970.
Regarding the neck heel surface, the 1969 model features a flat transition to the neck, while the 1970 model, this particular instrument, has a raised volute at the heel. Similar to the headstock back paint, volute-shaped bases are also found on some 1969 models, indicating that the headstock back specification changed between 1969 and 1970.
The bridge plate also differs. The 1969 model features a maple bridge plate secured by only two bolts for the adjustable saddles. The 1970 model, however, uses a total of five bolts: the two for the adjustable saddles plus three additional bolts. This suggests the design was modified to increase the strength securing the bridge.

It's fascinating how specification changes can be observed even within the same Everly Brothers model, giving a sense of Gibson's era. Despite its 16-inch size, it has a rich, full-bodied tone that feels great to play. The bridge plate specification change might also contribute to tonal differences.
