Explanation
Martin / 1970 D-45
[Demo Video]
"The D-45, of which only 81 were produced"
From late 1969 through 1970, Brazilian rosewood—which had been used for the sides and back—was replaced with Indian rosewood due to the Washington Convention (CITES). In particular, only 81 D-45s were produced in 1970. Among them, a D-45 like this one, which has retained such beautiful cosmetic condition, is extremely rare.
—Beautiful straight-grained Indian rosewood Indian rosewood is used for the sides and back. Although this instrument was made during the transition period between wood types, it features Indian rosewood with beautiful brown contrast and a straight grain. As this is the special D-45 model, it is evident that high-quality wood was carefully selected. The sides and back are adorned with white celluloid and abalone shell inlays. The intricate inlay work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship.
—Back Strips The D-45’s signature multicolored design is Recruit. The colorful lines stand out beautifully against the straight-grained rosewood.
—Top The top features fine-grained, rare German spruce. The body is adorned with white celluloid and abalone shell purfling that shimmers beautifully.
—Pickguard A black pickguard is standard, but this instrument has been fitted with a tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard. It is a very atmospheric material that allows the wood grain and soundhole ring to show through.
—Soundhole The soundhole is adorned with a white and black ring, as well as an abalone rosette.
ーFingerboard The fingerboard, finished in ebony and edged with white binding, features hexagonal abalone shell inlays that illuminate the jet-black surface.
—Neck The mahogany neck, with its moderate thickness, is finished in a gentle V-shape. Volute shaping has been carefully applied to ensure structural integrity.
ーBridge The ebony down-belly bridge is fitted with a short saddle. The white bridge pins have been replaced with ivoroid ones. The pins, featuring a beautiful distinctive pattern, are adorned with abalone dots.
—Headstock As a remnant of previous years, the use of Brazilian rosewood for the veneer is a specification unique to this era. It was also during this period that the headstock shape changed from a rounded profile to a more angular one.
—Vertical Logo Commonly known as the "vertical logo," the C.F. Martin logo features a slender "M" and a distinctive "R" font. From the 1970s onward, the "M" in the logo began to appear in a bolder font.
- Tuning Machines It is equipped with a Grover 102 model featuring a "PAT" engraving. The use of flathead screws on the knob sides is also a characteristic of GROVER tuners used in the 1970s. The 4th string peg has been replaced with one featuring a longer post (marked with "PAT"). Additionally, while the PAT markings on the 1st–3rd and 5th–6th strings are on the inside, the marking on the 4th string peg is on the outside, confirming that it has been replaced.
[Staff Comment: Hoshino]
In addition to possessing features typical of instruments from the 1970s—such as changes in wood specifications and logo typography—this particular model is in excellent condition for its age, despite being one of only 81 ever produced. It is quite rare to come across one like this, and I believe many collectors are searching for it. Don’t miss out on this rare instrument!
