A First-Year Telecaster Bass—1968 "Paisley Red"!
Introduced in 1968 as Fender’s first reissue model, the Telecaster Bass is a recreation of the original 1951 Precision Bass. While faithfully adhering to vintage specifications—such as a one-piece maple neck, a through-body 2-way saddle (nickel, as used from 1954 onward), and single-coil pickups—it also pays meticulous attention to detail, incorporating period-specific features like paddle tuners and gray bobbins.
This instrument is a particularly rare 1968 “Paisley Red” Telecaster Bass. Reflecting the era when
the United States was swept up in the “Flower Power Movement” and “psychedelic culture,” this elusive color scheme was produced in limited quantities for just two years, from 1968 to 1969.
The top and back of the body are finished with paisley-patterned wallpaper, and a clear coat has been applied over it to ensure better preservation.
While Telecaster Basses typically use ash wood, just like the Original Precision Bass, this particular instrument features a somewhat rare alder body, which produces a warmer, more resonant tone.
It comes complete with the pickup covers, bridge cover, finger rest, and even the original hard case from that era. With all pickup and pot components still in their original condition, this is truly a collector’s dream.
The nut and frets have been replaced. Additionally, the fingerboard and neck grip have been refinished. While there are signs of wear, such as chipped paint, all of these details tell the story of this Bass’s “living history.” Despite being a single-coil model, it delivers a surprisingly thick, full-bodied mid-low range.
It stands apart from the classic Jazz Bass and Precision Bass, showcasing the unique character of the Telecaster Bass. In particular, the rich, full-bodied 1960s Fender sound produced by the alder body is so convincing that you’ll instinctively know it’s “the one” the moment you try it out.
