Featuring a deep cherry sunburst finish and Gotoh tuners, this is the quintessential 1967 model.
While the tobacco sunburst J-45, famously used by Takuro Yoshida, also returned this year, this faded cherry sunburst finish—a change from the easily fading cherry sunburst used until 1966—is representative of this model year.
The tuners are also characteristic of this period. The open-back design with its glossy plating is striking, and the back bears the "JAPAN" stamp. These are made by Gotoh, a leading Japanese parts manufacturer. Considering that Japanese-made parts were used on the J-45, a model representing Gibson—the iconic American guitar brand—since the late 1960s, is truly profound.
The sound combines the crisp attack characteristic of a narrow neck and adjustable bridge with a rich, full-bodied mid-to-low range that feels wonderfully compressed. It's an absolute joy to play, even when strumming hard.
