Epiphone / 1967 FT-120 Excellente
This instrument is one of the highest-end models produced by Epiphone at the Kalamazoo factory. Despite being a top-tier model, its status as a "hidden gem" stems from its extremely limited production run. Only 141 were ever made between its initial production in 1963 and 1970.
The elaborate decorations throughout exude luxury and the presence befitting a top-tier model. Let's explore the charm of this instrument.
- The dynamic carving on the pickguard
The large tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard, molded to follow the body's contours, features a dynamic sculpture of an eagle perched on a branch. Complementing this is a sculpture resembling a fir tree cone. To express shading, the engraved lines are colored with white and yellow ink. Depending on the era, some examples feature only yellow coloring.
The large square-shouldered body utilizes straight-grained spruce, with weather checking adding a touch of sophistication.
The sides and back are made of straight-grained rosewood, showcasing beautiful figure. No back strip is used, allowing the rosewood pattern to be seen across the entire back.
The fingerboard is made of ebony and features a cloud inlay crafted from mother-of-pearl. The 15th fret features a square inlay. A narrow neck is another characteristic.
The neck features a slightly thicker profile and is constructed with a 7-ply structure of mahogany with walnut sandwiched between. A gold strap pin has been added to the neck heel.
The neck is finished with an over-lacquer.
The bridge is made of ebony with a unique design and features a matte ceramic adjustable saddle.
The headstock, notably large and prominent even among Epiphones, features the Epiphone logo alongside a large cloud inlay, seemingly signifying a higher-end model. This cloud inlay is composed of three combined parts.
Gold KLUSON Sealfast tuning machines are fitted.
Its premium-tier aesthetics and commanding presence make it a standout instrument on stage. Hear its dynamic, powerful sound and you'll be hooked.
