The D-28 was introduced in 1931 and named after the British battleship “Dreadnought.”Even now, more than 90 years after its debut, it remains the undisputed standard for acoustic guitars, beloved by artists around the world while undergoing subtle specification changes to keep pace with the times. The powerful sound produced by this large “Dreadnought” body size—popularized by Martin—has played an indispensable role, particularly in the history of folk music.

This instrument was built in 1967, a year that marked a crucial transitional period in the history of vintage Martin guitars.

The sides and back feature rare Brazilian rosewood—sourced before the transition to Indian rosewood in the late 1960s—allowing you to savor the beautiful tone with its characteristic sweet yet well-defined contours.Combined with the Sitka spruce top, the sound is truly “the sound you heard on those folk song records.” The bright, mellow tone—with its rounded edges—is amplified by the massive Dreadnought body, captivating both the player and the listener with its rich harmonics. It’s a sound brimming with musical joy that makes you want to strum the chords with vigor.

The rounded headstock features vintage Grover tuners, commonly known as “milk bottles.”

The neck features a gentle V-shape with a volute profile. This design makes chord shapes in the lower positions easy to grip, offering playability that’s ideal for strum-oriented folk music.Another noteworthy point is that 1967 marked a transitional period when the internal neck reinforcement changed from a “T-bar rod” to a “square rod.” This instrument is an example that still features the “T-bar rod” from before the specification change, making it a highly valuable find for vintage enthusiasts.

The crowning touch is the original black pickguard. For guitars of this era—where pickguards are almost always replaced due to issues specific to Martin guitars—the fact that the original remains intact is extremely rare. While there is some peeling in places and traces of signatures in English letters, presumably from previous owners, these imperfections only serve to heighten the aura of authenticity and romance unique to a genuine vintage instrument that has weathered over half a century of history.
