Gibson / 1966 J-45 Cherry Sunburst
"A distinct, subdued clarity that differs from natural finishes"
Cherry Sunburst debuted in 1962 as a new finish following the Brown Sunburst.
Unlike the expressions of black and brown, it features a vivid reddish hue and a gentle orange-toned coloring.
ーA tastefully faded coloration.
The spruce body has seen the red pigments fade over time, revealing a vivid orange hue.
Upon closer inspection, faint traces of the original cherry color remain visible along the body's edges.
While thicker, more reddish large pickguards were adopted starting in 1964, this instrument has been fitted with a thinner, tortoiseshell-patterned large pickguard used prior to 1964.
It's likely this was done to emulate a cherry sunburst model from around 1962-1963.
Mahogany is used for the sides and back, finished with a reddish lacquer to match the cherry color.
This distinct lacquer color on the sides and back, differing from the brown sunburst, is another aspect to appreciate the color scheme.
The rosette features the double-ring design adopted starting in 1963.
The fingerboard is rosewood with inlaid dot position markers.
The neck features a thinner profile and is characterized by the narrower neck shape introduced in 1965.
The rosewood bridge on the upper belly features an adjustable saddle.
Models with adjustable saddles made from a mix of ceramic and wood can be seen.
The headstock bears the gold Gibson modern logo silk-screen, characteristic of the J-45.
The bell-shaped truss rod cover is one-piece.
The tuning machines are Kluson Deluxe two-line white button triple-pegs.
The shaft extending toward the button on the third string peg is bent, but rest assured, tuning functions perfectly fine.
While cherry finishes with lingering red tones are popular on the market, this instrument's subtly faded appearance is also exceptionally appealing.
Its unique, understated charm differs from natural finishes, and the weather checking stands out beautifully.
