A 1966 J-45 in the custom color Cherry Red. Some may have noticed the year and wondered. Generally, Gibson Acoustic custom colors (mainly Cherry Red and Ebony Black) have serial dates from 1967 to 1969.
The key to resolving this question is the "BGN" stamp on the back of the headstock.
This stamp is not something a later owner added; it is believed to have been applied at the Gibson factory. "BGN" is one of the identification marks stamped on the back of the headstock at the Gibson factory, standing for "Bargain." It indicates a guitar sold to employees at a significantly discounted price, and these instruments are said not to have entered the general market. Therefore, we believe this particular instrument had issues for general distribution and was sold to employees as a Cherry Red model.
While its market value may have been low at the time, today, a 1966-dated Custom color is virtually unseen, making this an extremely rare item.
While there is a crack repair on the back of the body, the only replaced part is the nut (the original plastic nut is also included). The original Cherry Red finish is well-preserved, and the overall condition, including playability, is excellent.
This is a highly recommended piece that also holds collectible value.
