Explanation
Gibson / 1966 Hummingbird Natural
"Natural-colored Hummingbird"
The Hummingbird in natural colors has been part of the lineup since 1963. The side and back feature a cherry color scheme, creating a vibrant and cheerful impression. In 1965, the head angle changed from 17 degrees to 14 degrees, and in the same year, the neck was changed from a regular neck to a narrow neck, among other transformations. This particular unit reflects those specification changes, and it's likely one of the more stable models in the lineup.
- Changed from a nut width of 42.4mm to a narrow neck of 40.3mm.
While 1965 Hummingbird models included both regular neck and narrow neck versions, the transition to the narrow neck became more pronounced from 1966 onwards. Although the difference is only about 2mm, when you hold it, you can really feel the difference in the width of the neck in your hand.
The top is finished in a natural color, and the weather checking enhances its vintage look.
The pickguard, designed by Gibson designer Hartford Schneider at the time, features a design of butterflies fluttering around flowers and hummingbirds sipping nectar. The line art is colored with yellow ink.
The sides and back are made of mahogany and finished in a cherry color. You can see the tight grain of the mahogany even through the finish.
The mahogany neck has a slightly thicker shape, making it easy to grip and comfortable to hold, even with a narrow neck profile.
The rosewood upper belly bridge is fitted with a ceramic adjustable bridge. This makes it easy to adjust the string height.
The headstock features Gibson's modern logo as well as a crown inlay.
The tuning machine is a KLUSON DELUXE 325VP. Gold hardware enhances its luxurious feel.
This particular instrument is a rare find, featuring a natural color, a narrow neck, and no cracks. The Hummingbird's appeal lies in its bright yet powerful tone. Furthermore, this guitar is also enjoyable to look at, thanks to its artistic pickguard design and other features.
