Explanation
Gibson / 1966 Dove Cutaway Custom
The Dove is a square-shouldered model introduced in 1962 as a higher-end version of the Hummingbird. This particular instrument is an extremely rare example featuring a Florentine cutaway, similar to the CF-100E. It is likely a prototype or a one-off custom order. Based on its specifications, including the serial number, it is estimated to have been manufactured around 1966. Another distinctive feature is its tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard without any decorative inlays.
It features a spruce top, maple back and sides, a one-piece mahogany neck, a 25 1/2-inch scale, non-scalloped X-bracing, and Kluson VX-501 nickel tuners—commonly known as “Waffle Back.” The subdued sunburst finish lends it a rich, timeless charm. The crown inlay on the headstock and the double parallelogram position inlays create a gorgeous appearance. The T.O.M. saddle is a hallmark of 1960s Doves, and the dove-shaped inlays on both sides are beautiful.
The tone is bright and lively, yet it has a solid core and excellent clarity.
