Explanation
A vintage SG in excellent condition. A 1965 Gibson SG STANDARD featuring the small guard.
In 1961, the Les Paul model underwent a design change from the previous single-cutaway style, adopting a deep, sharply angled double-cutaway and a thin, one-piece mahogany body. Subsequently, around 1963—following the termination of Gibson’s contract with Les Paul—Gibson renamed the double-cutaway model simply “SG” (short for “Solid Guitar”).Although the single-cutaway Les Paul was later revived, the SG has endured and remains a long-selling guitar still in production today. It is one of Gibson’s masterpieces that has captivated countless musicians, including Pete Townshend, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton.
This 1965 SG Standard features a small pickguard and small headstock typical of models produced through circa 1967; a one-piece mahogany neck characteristic of models produced through circa 1969; a robust neck joint—used from circa 1963 to 1967—that integrates the body back with the neck; numbered PAF pickups; and an original Maestro vibrato unit.
A key characteristic of the sound produced by vintage humbuckers is that it is more lustrous and has a richer harmonic structure than standard humbuckers. With its thin, slender, and easy-to-play neck, as well as a body whose resonance has significantly improved through years of live performance, this guitar delivers a rich, vintage SG sound. It’s also visually stunning—an SG that’s a joy to display.
