Explanation
Gibson / 1964 B-25N
[Demo Video]
Introduced in 1962 as the successor to the LG-3 and designated the B-25N, this model represents a transitional period featuring a modified pickguard specification.
- Thin Large Pickguard In 1964, the specification changed from thin tortoiseshell-patterned large pickguards (including on the J-45) to thicker, reddish pickguards. This instrument, however, features the earlier thin large pickguard specification.
- Upper Belly Bridge While the 1964 B-25N typically features an adjustable bridge, this particular instrument has been fitted with a slot saddle bridge (judging by the grain and pores, it appears to be mahogany). Additionally, a veneer plate has been added inside the body (directly beneath the bridge), layered over the original spruce bridge plate. This is likely to ensure structural integrity when replacing the bridge.
Furthermore, while the diagonal bracing directly beneath the bridge plate typically consists of only two rows, this instrument has an additional brace positioned directly under the bridge, running parallel to the bottom of the bridge plate. This is likely intended to enhance the top's strength or to suppress top vibration and prevent feedback when using the pickup.
Top Wood This small-body model uses spruce. The natural finish body is wrapped with binding combining white and black.
ーSide/Back Wood The mahogany sides and back are finished in a cherry red color. The beautiful mahogany grain indicates the use of high-quality wood.
- Fingerboard The rosewood fingerboard features dot position markers. Additionally, repairs to the fingerboard can be seen from the 1st to 5th frets. This repair was likely done to flatten areas of the fingerboard that had become worn from string pressure.
ーNeck The mahogany neck features a thinner profile, offering a comfortable grip. A strap pin has been added to the heel.
- Headstock The headstock features a simple Gibson silk-screen logo. The bell-shaped truss rod cover is one-piece.
This is a great choice for those who like the sound of a small body and prefer a slot saddle over an adjustable saddle. Also equipped with an L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup, making it great for street performances and live shows.
[Staff Comment: Hoshino]
While the bridge area has been replaced, examining the actual instrument led me to believe this is a piece that's been played with a strong focus on tone, considering the pickup selection and such. It doesn't have the sound of an adjustable saddle, yet it interestingly retains a certain airiness characteristic of adjustable saddles.
