The DOVE debuted as the top-tier model of the 1962 Square Shoulder series. Only 17 units were shipped in its first year, making this instrument one of those rare examples. It features distinct side/back wood, pickguard design, and bridge compared to the Hummingbird, boasting the luxurious appearance befitting a flagship model that has gained popularity. We will now introduce the details of this first-year DOVE.
ーThe Dove Design Symbolizing Peace
The iconic DOVE pickguard design is said to have been conceived by Hartford Snyder, who was also a craftsman at Gibson at the time. The dove, symbolizing peace, is carved from mother-of-pearl, accompanied by a perch, leaves, a thorny branch, and rose-like petals. Each carved motif is vividly colored with vibrant inks.
The top of the square-shouldered body is crafted from spruce and finished in a cherry sunburst color. A first-year DOVE retaining its vivid red hue even after over 60 years is a rare and precious instrument.
The sides and back feature maple finished in cherry. The figured maple reveals different expressions depending on the viewing angle, a signature characteristic of the DOVE.
The fingerboard is crafted from rosewood, and like the Hummingbird, it features double parallelogram inlays that enhance its luxurious appearance.
The mahogany neck features a slim profile for a comfortable grip. The neck back bears the telltale marks of countless performances.
The large bridge, characteristic of DOVE, features dove-motif decorations on both sides. Another significant point is that DOVE is equipped with its own Tune-O-Matic.
The headstock features Gibson's modern logo alongside a crown inlay, signifying a higher-end model. The bell-shaped truss rod cover lacks the Dove engraving.
The tuning machines are KLUSON MH-500VX (commonly known as Waffleback) tuners. Since Grover 102s became standard from the mid-60s onward, this model featuring Waffleback tuners is quite rare!
Being a first-year Dove model alone makes this a valuable piece, but even more surprising is its beautiful condition: it retains a strong reddish hue and is completely crack-free. Many have surely admired it after seeing it used by Elvis Presley or Keith Richards. Please take this opportunity to enjoy this instrument.
