Explanation
Gibson / 1962 Dove
The Dove was introduced in 1962 as the top-of-the-line model with a square shoulder strap. Only 17 units were shipped in the first year, and this particular unit is one of those rare and valuable pieces. Its luxurious appearance, befitting a top-of-the-line model, including different side/back materials, pickguard design, and bridge compared to the Hummingbird, has made it very popular. Let's take a closer look at the details of the inaugural year of Dove.
- A dove design symbolizing peace
It is said that the iconic pickguard design of the Dove was conceived by Hartford Snyder, who was also a craftsman at Gibson at the time. The dove, a symbol of peace, is crafted from mother-of-pearl and features carvings of leaves, thorny branches, and rose-like petals, including its perch. Each sculpture's motif is vividly colored with colorful inks.
The square-shouldered body features a spruce top and is finished in a cherry sunburst color. Even after more than 60 years, this first-year Dove still retains its vibrant red hue, making it a rare and precious find.
The sides and back are made of maple wood with a cherry-colored finish. One of the unique features of the Figured Maple is that it shows different expressions depending on the viewing angle.
The fretboard is made of rosewood, and like the Hummingbird, the double parallelogram inlays enhance its luxurious appearance.
The mahogany neck has a thin profile, making it comfortable to hold. The scratches on the back of the neck tell the story of countless performances.
The large bridge, a signature feature of the DOVE model, is adorned with dove motifs on both sides. Another major selling point of the Dove is that it features a dedicated Tune-O-Matic system.
The headstock features Gibson's modern logo, as well as a crown inlay that signifies a higher-end model. The bell-shaped truss rod cover does not have the Dove logo engraved on it.RecruitIt is being done.
The tuning machine is equipped with a KLUSON MH-500VX (commonly known as the Waffleback) tuner. From the mid-60s, they switched to the GROVER 102, so the waffle bagRecruitThis particular unit is a rare find!
This is a valuable item simply because it's a first-year Dove specimen, but what's even more surprising is that it retains its vibrant red color and is in beautiful, crack-free condition. Many people probably admired it after seeing it used by Elvis Presley and Keith Richards. Please take this opportunity to enjoy this device.
