Explanation
Martin / 1961 D-28
[Demo Video]
A D-28 with specifications up to 1964
The ebony down-bowed bridge features a long saddle. This specification was used from around 1934 to 1964, later changing to a short saddle. The bridge has been replaced, but the wood selection and gluing are very clean.
The maple bridge plate has been reinforced with matching maple wood due to wear on the strap pin holes from years of playing. As this area affects tuning and tone, the photos clearly show the meticulous repair work performed.
The tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard features a reddish-toned variant. This specification was used until around 1965, after which it was changed to black.
The top is made of spruce, featuring multicolor purfling and ivoroid binding.
Brazilian rosewood with beautiful striped patterns is used for the sides and back, with ivoroid binding matching the top's binding.
The fingerboard is made of ebony with mother-of-pearl position markers. A distinctive feature is the progressively smaller dot size toward the higher frets.
The neck is crafted from mahogany, featuring a thick V-shaped profile. The neck is finished with an over-lacquer coating. A strap pin is added to the heel.
The Brazilian rosewood veneer headstock has a rounded shape, with the top of the headstock over-lacquered extending to the sides.
Grover 102 tuning machines with "PAT" engraving are installed. The headstock back also features an over-lacquer finish.
[Staff Comment: Hoshino]
The meticulous restoration work has produced such a beautiful sound that you can truly appreciate how its wide range and the way the sound spreads offer a distinct charm compared to other D-28s. This is a special instrument retaining specifications from the mid-1960s.
