Explanation
Gibson / 1958 J-45
This particular unit was manufactured in 1958, according to its factory order number (FON). You can see that the crack prevention material on the back of the body is inscribed with "J-45 ADJ BRIDGE".
The adjustable bridge option was added starting in 1956. In its early days, it had a distinctive style with large dial knobs for adjusting the string height on both sides of the bridge (as seen on the J160E).Recruit)。 However, soon after, aluminumBassWe will now transition to the adjustable bridge. Furthermore, in the late 1950s, the image changed dramatically, with a combination of a pure white ceramic saddle and large screws.
1958 was the year when the number of adjustable-saddle models shipped first surpassed that of straight-saddle models, indicating that the standard for the J-45 was changing. The mechanism that allowed for easy string height adjustment without having to file down the saddle must have been revolutionary even back then. Gibson occasionally creates historical treasures like the invention of the adjustable truss rod. It's not just the fact that it's adjustable, but also the significant impact it has on the sound, and considering how it's connected to the sound of Donovan and Takuro Yoshida's songs, it's truly moving. This particular unit uses replacement parts, resulting in a 1960s specification.
Another distinctive feature of this particular instrument is its finish. The sunburst on the body top has faded and aged, resulting in a finish that closely resembles a honey sunburst. This is characteristic of finishes seen around 1960.
This doesn't match the "FON" designation, but the key here is the "2" stamped on the back of the headstock. This indicates that it is a second-hand item and is stamped when there are cosmetic defects or other issues.
Another point worth noting here is the shape of its neck. While guitars from around 1958 typically have a thicker neck shape, this particular instrument has a relatively thinner neck. The following is for reference:
Another unit from 1958 Neck thickness around the 1st to 2nd fret: 23.3mm Neck thickness around the 4th to 5th frets: 24.5mm
Another unit from 1960 Neck thickness around the 1st to 2nd frets: 20.0mm Neck thickness around the 4th to 5th frets: 21.0mm
This individual Neck thickness around the 1st to 2nd fret: 20.6mm Neck thickness around the 4th to 5th fret: 20.9mm
Based on these factors, it's likely that this guitar was manufactured once in 1958, but due to some kind of problem, the neck and finish were re-set around 1960. However, the reddish tint remains on the back of the body, which is a characteristic of the cherry sunburst finish from 1961 onwards, so it's quite puzzling. This is a very interesting film because it allows for a lot of imagination.
There are no problems using it as a vintage guitar. I think being able to enjoy it along with these kinds of stories is actually an advantage.
