The SJ-200/J-200 reigns as the top-of-the-line model among Gibson acoustics. The sound produced by its 17-inch body width and long scale is truly one-of-a-kind. Its powerful tone, combining boldness and brilliance, has been loved by many musicians, including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Keith Richards. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this guitar so special!
—Flower engravings on the reddish pickguard
Starting in 1955, the specification changed from a tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard with a strong brown hue to one with a stronger reddish tint. This model also reflects this specification change, and the flower engraving—a hallmark of the SJ-200/J-200—stands out beautifully. The carved lines are colored yellow, and all 12 dots are also colored yellow.
True to its status as a top-of-the-line model, the Super Jumbo body top is crafted from spruce, known for its fine grain. The body is finished in a brown sunburst. Around the soundhole, you can see pick scratches that hint at the many songs that have been played on this guitar.
The purfling features a double ring.
Beautifully figured maple is used for the sides and back, revealing different expressions depending on the viewing angle. Black accents are applied to the neck heel and the indentations on the sides, while the body back features a burst finish that lightens toward the center. The backstrip features Pattern B, which was used from 1940 to 1958.
The fingerboard is made of rosewood, and the crown inlays enhance its luxurious appearance. It’s also fun to see how the inlay design changes as it moves toward the higher frets.
The neck is crafted from beautifully figured maple, with a burst finish applied from the back of the neck to the 1st fret and from the 9th fret to the neck heel. The finish is applied in a way that does not detract from the beautiful grain, perhaps enhancing the instrument’s visual appeal. The neck shape features a grip with just the right thickness, making it comfortable to hold.
The mustache bridge, one of the defining features of the SJ-200/J-200, is crafted from rosewood. There are a total of four square mother-of-pearl inlays: two under the saddle and two under the bridge pins. Additionally, this model features an abalone inlay between the 3rd and 4th string bridge pins on the 3-string mustache bridge. This appears to have been added during a previous repair.
The large, bound headstock features the Gibson modern logo as well as a crown inlay, indicating a high-end model. The bell-shaped truss rod cover features a thick white border. The truss rod cover is also positioned low, closer to the nut.
The tuning machines have been replaced with Kluson Deluxe models, but the choice of keystone pegs with gold hardware—which closely resembles the appearance of the Kluson Single-Line models used since around 1951—reflects the thoughtful consideration of an owner who truly loves the J-200.
What do you think? "I want a powerful tone!" "I want a great guitar!" If these are your aspirations, you absolutely must try this instrument! With every strum, you’re sure to feel the joy of playing and discover the hidden charm of this instrument.
