"The miraculous combination of scalloped X-bracing and a large pickguard"
Gibson / 1955 J-45
This instrument has been aged over 70 years and exudes an overwhelming presence.
Gibson’s flat-top guitars underwent various specification changes throughout the 1950s and 1960s—for example, the small pickguard from the early 1950s was replaced by a large one in 1955, and adjustable bridges began to be installed in 1956.
Among these, the combination of scalloped X-bracing and a large pickguard is said to exist only in the 1955 model.
With the unique raw power and rich tone that this configuration offers, this is a must-try for anyone looking for a J-45 with a "special tone unlike any other."
I can picture the moment when, out and about, someone says, “Hey, what’s that cool-looking guitar?” If I can share the special story and tone of this particular instrument at that moment, they won’t be able to help but praise it.
When I think about it that way, I find myself envying those born in 1955.
That’s because such a magnificent instrument was crafted in the very year they were born.
In the long history of the J-45, only 1,432 were manufactured in 1955.
How many of those are still in existence today?
Such a rare vintage J-45 would undoubtedly make a lifelong companion.
While it has a vintage appearance, the condition of the wood and its playability are exceptional.
This particular instrument has no cracks, the original pickguard—which was originally inlaid—is beautifully preserved, and there is no repair history in the surrounding areas.
Now, 70 years after its manufacture, the probability of finding a crack-free J-45—one of the 1,432 originally produced—with its original pickguard still intact is nothing short of a miracle. Since there simply aren’t enough of these in circulation to choose from, finding one in this condition feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
It has likely been played in a variety of styles over the years. And yet, it still retains its wonderful tone and condition.
It undoubtedly possesses the value and sound to serve as a lifelong companion for years to come.
