Explanation
Gibson / 1942 J-35
"A legendary model with a longer history than the J-45"
The J-35 debuted in 1936. Its specifications—a round-shoulder body, 14-fret jointed neck, rectangular bridge, and long saddle—were carried over to the J-45 introduced in 1942. This instrument is from 1942, the same year the J-45 debuted.
ーDistinctive J-35 Specifications
The headstock shape is not the curved stock often seen, but rather features a distinctive shape that bulges as it approaches the top of the headstock. The logo is also distinctive; the J-35 features a script logo printed in white ink.
The top is made of spruce, and the rosette features a 7-layer multicolor design. Furthermore, the soundhole is positioned slightly below the fingerboard end. The body color is finished in a natural color, which appeared around 1939.
The pickguard features the fire-stripe pattern inherited from the Advance Jambo. Despite being over 80 years old, its unique luster remains intact.
Mahogany is used for the sides and back. The body is finished in a light walnut color. It gives a warm impression where you can really feel the mahogany's grain.
The fingerboard is rosewood with dot position markers.
The mahogany neck features a substantial C-shape profile. Combined with a 43.5mm nut width, it delivers a solid, substantial feel. This neck likely contributes significantly to the bold, expansive sound.
Evidence of a previous neck reset is visible. This procedure ensures a comfortable playing experience with the correct neck angle, resulting in excellent playability.
The rectangular bridge is made of rosewood and features a long saddle. While repairs from lateral cracks are visible due to years of use, it's clear the instrument has been cherished and maintained with care.
The tuning machines are KLUSON triple-lock pegs bearing the PAT stamp. They exhibit remarkably stable operation, hard to believe for a pre-war instrument.
A minor detail: the side ribbing (crack prevention) on the inner body's side panels uses fabric material, with six pieces on each side (twelve total). Similarly, the 1941 SJ-200 uses this fabric material, but it's confirmed that the 1950s Gibson J-50 switched to wooden material. This fabric side ribbing may be a specification unique to pre-war instruments.

Observing this instrument reveals its history of extensive performance use. Wear from neck finish loss, playing marks from strumming, and impact marks visible on the body and headstock. This guitar makes you realize anew that these factors are crucial to its bold, expansive sound felt the instant you strum.
[Staff Comment: Hoshino]
The sound is simply powerful. It's thick, yet crisp and sharp within that thickness, making it a pleasure to play even when strumming. It's the kind of guitar you'll want to keep playing forever.
