Martin / 1941 D-18
The D-18 debuted alongside the D-28 in 1931.
As a mahogany dreadnought, it produces a rich, full-bodied tone distinct from Gibson's signature sound.
This instrument is a rare pre-war specimen, a masterpiece with an authentic presence.
—A lightweight dreadnought with full resonance
Named after the British battleship "Dreadnought," this body size later gained popularity through use by artists like Peter Fonda and Elvis Presley.
The top features wide-grained spruce, with its charming character marks from years of playing: picking scars, dents, and weather checking.
The binding features a tortoiseshell pattern.

The pickguard also features a lacquered tortoiseshell pattern.

The sides and back are made of mahogany, a Style-18 specification, and the scratches and dents likely accumulated over years of use tell countless stories.

Ebony was used for the fingerboard from the model's debut, transitioning to rosewood starting in 1946.
This particular instrument features ebony with faint stripes in places.

The neck is mahogany, featuring a comfortable V-shape.
The lacquer has thinned in places, showing it's been played extensively.

The down-bowed bridge is made of ebony and features a long saddle.

The rosewood veneer headstock bears the C.F. Martin classic logo and features a distinctive angular headstock shape.

Open-back tuners are fitted, and the silver plating has worn off over time, revealing brass in places.
This vintage-specific patina adds to its cool factor.

What do you think?
The crisp yet powerful tone unique to a pre-war instrument comes from over 80 years of age and the sound developed through years of playing.
Experience the rare sound of a pre-war instrument for yourself.
It might just change your perception of the D-18.
