Explanation
Gibson / 1940s JUMBO-55
Produced from around 1939 to 1943, the JUMBO-55 is an interesting guitar with variations in headstock shape and bridge design depending on the specific year of manufacture. While it shares specifications similar to the J-45 and Southern Jumbo among round-shouldered models, it possesses a distinct presence and look.
—Open Moustache Bridge
While some JUMBO-55s feature a three-dimensional bridge like the SJ-100, this model is fitted with a rosewood open mustache bridge, similar to that found on the SJ-200. Additionally, the inclusion of individually adjustable saddles for each string is another feature that sets it apart from other round-shoulder models.
The 16-inch round-shoulder top is made of spruce. As befits an instrument over 80 years old, it shows signs of crack repairs, scratches and dents from years of playing, and weather checking; however, it has been thoroughly reinforced and remains in active use, producing a crisp yet powerful sound.
Unlike the J-45 or J-50, this model features a fire-stripe pickguard similar to that of the SJ-100.
Mahogany is used for the sides and back, and the crack repairs, scratches, and dents from years of use enhance the instrument’s unique vintage character. The mahogany grain is tightly packed, indicating the use of high-quality wood.
The ebony fingerboard features mother-of-pearl dot position markers, which is another distinguishing feature among round-shoulder models. Additionally, the sides of the fingerboard are adorned with ivoroid binding.
The mahogany neck has a shape with just the right thickness; it feels comfortable in the hand and fits naturally.
The neck heel has been repaired with a filled-in strap pin hole.
The headstock also has a distinctive shape; while the JUMBO-55, commonly known as the "Gibson headstock," can be found on the market, the stair-step headstock like the one on this instrument is a shape that began appearing on some models around 1939. Interestingly, the SJ-100, which features a similar headstock, also debuted in 1939, making this an intriguing commonality.
The tuning machines are equipped with Kluson open-back tuners.
What do you think? Looking at the detailed specifications, you can sense a round-shoulder-like appearance reminiscent of the SJ-200 and SJ-100, along with a luxurious look. Since the JUMBO-55 with these specifications is rarely seen on the market, this is a truly rare instrument.
