"KING OF THE FLAT-TOPS" 1940 Original SJ-200
Gibson / 1940 SJ-200
Known as the "King of Flat-Tops," the J-200 continues to reign as Gibson’s flagship model.
It all began in 1938 with the introduction of the SUPER JUMBO "200," a jumbo-sized guitar developed in 1937 through a collaboration between Gibson and Ray Whitley, a popular Western movie actor and singer.
Loved by countless musicians—including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones)—this is the king of acoustic guitars that has graced legendary stages.
The model we have just received is an original 1940 SJ-200.
Only 96 original SJ-200s were manufactured between 1938 and 1941, making it an extremely rare model on par with the 91 so-called pre-war D-45s.

This particular instrument features rosewood sides and back, characteristic of pre-war specifications, and is distinguished by its ebony mustache bridge with individually adjustable saddles for each string.

Upon closer inspection, the pickguard follows the late 1950s pattern, and the bracing structure of the body top suggests that it was factory-re-topped in the 1950s.
Even today, a 1950s J-200 is a rare vintage instrument.
Given that this combination would be nearly impossible to achieve today, you can surely appreciate just how special and luxurious this particular instrument is.

The headstock features a gleaming script logo and crown inlay,
and the back of the headstock, featuring a stinger design, is equipped with Kluson Seal-Fast tuners boasting substantial-feeling peg buttons.

The crowning touch is the hardware for securing the strap pins, mounted on the headstock and body end. This is also an original specification from the pre-war SJ-200, and you can fully appreciate its charm from these vintage parts.

A vintage masterpiece available to only a select few.
In terms of sound, this is a magnificent guitar that offers a tremendous volume, setting it apart from the reissued J-200 models.
