The surface of the spruce used for the top features a stunning “bear claw” pattern that captivates at first glance. This is a natural figure—a grain pattern—that occasionally appears in high-quality, mature wood, and the intersecting wood fibers give this particular instrument a beauty and character all its own.
The high-quality mahogany used for the sides and back produces a warm, sweet midrange and lends a rich, resonant body tone to plucked notes.
The sound emanating from this wood, which has aged for over half a century, is a “matured tone” with all its rough edges completely smoothed out. It imparts a superb core and luster to the attack of the notes—a quality that
newly crafted guitars can never replicate—elevating the definition of each individual note to a level of boundless transparency.
Vintage Martin 0-18s are rare finds in themselves, with fewer appearing on the market each year, but it’s extremely rare to come across an instrument with such vivid bearclaw figuring across the entire top.
