Explanation
Yokoyama Guitars / AR-GC German Spruce, Camatillo
Expressive highs, clear harmonics, and clarity in fast passages. There aren’t many instruments that can deliver all of that at once.
If you are currently thinking, "I want a guitar that responds more honestly to my fingers," "I want a guitar I can trust to produce my own sound, whether in the studio or on stage," then you might call it fate that you’ve landed on this page.
Yokoyama Guitars AR-GC── is the culmination of meticulous and sincere craftsmanship, born from the hands of guitar builder Tadashi Yokoyama. In 1975, Mr. Yokoyama joined Maurice, where he gained experience in a wide range of production—from finishing and handcrafting to electric guitars and banjos. In 2006, driven by the desire to “create a guitar that would leave his own mark,” he finally launched a brand bearing his own name. Free from all constraints, he crafts guitars exactly as he envisions, delivering the ultimate instrument to countless players.
For the AR-GC featured here, German spruce was selected for the body, and Camatilo—a wood whose availability has drastically declined—was used generously. The top features a fine, dense grain with a three-dimensional quality, producing a sound that is both soft and resonant. Camatiro is a rare wood that catches the eye with its unique purplish hue and beautiful striped pattern, yet it combines the rich low end of rosewood with a responsive, lively tone—truly beautiful in both appearance and sound.
The moment you play it, you’ll instantly hear the difference. In particular, the low string action—optimized for fingerstyle playing—allows the overtones in the high register to rise beautifully, highlighting the transparency and depth of the sustain. Even in complex arrangements where melody and accompaniment intertwine, the contours of each note are preserved, creating a sense of separation akin to a piano. Furthermore, fretting in the high positions is extremely easy, and the guitar naturally adapts to playing fast phrases and harmonics.
The classic auditorium shape with a rounded cutaway fits the body well and is designed to reduce fatigue even during long performances. The vibrational energy is transmitted throughout the entire instrument without loss, faithfully reflecting the player’s nuances.
Furthermore, the exterior—stripped of unnecessary ornamentation to pursue essential beauty—is not to be overlooked. More than just “premium wood,” the fusion of carefully selected materials and meticulous craftsmanship is truly a design dedicated to sound. As time passes, the wood breathes, adapts to your sound, and grows with you. That is a Yokoyama guitar.
