[Features]
The Kanstal “Chicago” is a model crafted as a tribute to the prestigious Benge company—with which founder Zig Kanstal was deeply involved—and is modeled after the highly regarded “Old Benge” flugelhorns from the Chicago workshop era. Zig himself was involved in manufacturing at the Benge factory starting in 1970, and this instrument strongly reflects both his experience and the tradition of American brass instrument making.
The design features a classic French style, combining a 6-inch bell with a .415-inch small bore. It features compact coiling and a light, responsive playing feel, characterized by a soft, resonant tone that retains brightness. It offers an exquisite balance, allowing for well-defined articulation in solo passages while blending naturally with larger-bore flugelhorns in a section.
The bottom-spring valves offer a light touch and responsive action. The instrument accepts air effortlessly, making the transition from trumpet feel natural and seamless. The third slide features a trigger, allowing for precise pitch adjustments. While maintaining a traditional style, it also delivers all the functionality required for performance.
Kanstal is now out of business, so this Chicago model is only available on the secondhand market. It is an instrument born from the intersection of a tribute to Old Benji and Zig’s own experience in instrument making. We highly recommend this model to anyone who wants to enjoy its nimble response and bright, mellow flugelhorn sound.
