Should you really loosen the strings on an acoustic guitar?
Hello. This is Inoue, store manager at Advance Guitars.
This time, I’d like to take up that old question that could be called an “eternal theme” for everyone who loves acoustic guitars.
The answer is...
Should you really loosen the strings on an acoustic guitar?
“After you finish playing, be sure to loosen them for the neck.”
“No, it’s better to keep them fully tensioned to maintain the neck’s condition.”
“Because it puts stress on the nut and bridge, I only loosen them by a half-step.”
...and so on.
I myself have been involved with acoustic guitars as a player for many years, and I’ve heard all kinds of opinions on this issue. Even when I look it up on the internet or in instruction books, people say all sorts of different things, and many of you may end up wondering what is actually best for your instrument.
So this time, in our store’s instrument magazine, we have published a column that digs into this question in detail.
After all, should the strings be left as they are, or should they be loosened...?
In this article, we break down the mechanism in an easy-to-understand way from perspectives such as the guitar’s construction and the tension placed on the wood, and summarize one conclusion as advanced guitarists.
We wrote it in the hope that it will be at least a little helpful as a guide for keeping your precious instrument in good condition for a long time.
If you’re curious about the details... please check the full column article!
Reading it is, of course, free, so we’d be happy if you’d take a careful look.
