Explanation
“I want that weathered look and thick, dry tone of the original Blackguard I’ve always admired.” “But a thick neck seems hard to grip, and I don’t want to compromise on playability or the risk of notes getting muffled in the higher frets.” The overwhelming presence of vintage instruments and the high level of playability demanded on today’s stages. It’s not easy to find a single guitar that perfectly satisfies both of these criteria.
The Blackguard sound of the early ’50s, which helped shape the dawn of the electric guitar, remains the Holy Grail for many guitarists today. However, even with meticulously crafted Custom Shop replicas, individual variations often lead to complaints—such as the guitar being too heavy, the relic finish looking unnatural, or the neck being too thick, resulting in poor playability.Finding a guitar that makes no compromises on looks and is 100% reliable as a musical instrument is a daunting task.
The Early '50s Style Double Esquire Heavy Relic, crafted with the Fender Custom Shop’s finest craftsmanship and meticulously selected materials.
This instrument embodies top-tier specifications that will impress even the most discerning guitarists, combined with miraculous individual quality.
Lightweight at 3.27 kg! Meticulously selected, top-quality materials. A lightweight, offset-seam, two-piece ash body. Weighing just 3.27 kg, it ensures stress-free play even during long sets, while boasting the exceptional responsiveness unique to ash.
Breathtaking aged Esquire Blonde with delicate relics. While heavy relic finishes can vary widely from instrument to instrument, this model features exceptionally fine and realistic relic work. Combined with the exquisitely colored blonde finish, it exudes a formidable presence and aura, as if it had been cherished for years.
The 1950 Black Guard neck is fat yet easy to play. Finished with a slightly narrower 40.8mm nut width, it retains the fat, solid grip characteristic of the Black Guard while offering a comfortable, natural feel that fits the hand perfectly.
A compound radius enables a modern playing experience. The fingerboard features a compound radius that transitions from a vintage-style 7.25R at the nut to 9.50R toward the high frets. Medium vintage-style wire frets have been selected. This design achieves a high level of balance between beautifully defined tone on low chords and smooth, clutter-free bending in the high frets.
The traditional blender control has been faithfully recreated. It is equipped with two hand-wound 50-51 Blackguard pickups. The controls replicate the mix/front/front preset settings from around 1950 to 1952 (*due to the ultra-low resistance specification, the preset setting feels almost identical to the front setting). You can enjoy organic and comfortable sound shaping right at your fingertips with the blender control.
An ambitious Custom Shop creation that elevates vintage respect to the utmost while refining it to the quality demanded by modern guitarists. This instrument—a perfect balance of lightweight construction (3.27 kg), exquisite relic work, and modern playability—is truly a once-in-a-lifetime find. It is a masterpiece we especially recommend to players who want to strum authentic Blackguard tones in real-world settings.
The sound of the golden age of the genre, recreated with the finest craftsmanship. Bring this superior tone—one that sets itself apart from the moment you hear it—to your studio or stage.
