California Streetwoods Roasted Ash & Elm P Bass NOS Masterbuilt Jason Smith

This is a Masterbuilt bass from the Fender Custom Shop, but it’s not just any Masterbuilt. It’s part of the “
” California Streetwood Collection 2023!

Every year, the Fender Custom Shop releases a collection of guitars and basses crafted by each Master Builder based on a common theme.
These instruments fully showcase the Master Builders’ creativity, skill, and craftsmanship, featuring intricate finishes and exquisite combinations of exotic woods—each piece a unique expression of the individual builder’s artistry.

All of these collections consist of one-of-a-kind pieces and were sold exclusively at Fender Custom Shop showcase dealers.
First, let me introduce you to some of the collections from the past!

2021 “
” – a collection featuring an all-Surf Green lineup

Surf Green with Envy Collection

For this collection, each builder selected specifications from a specific year and finished all instruments in Surf Green.
The lineup extended beyond guitars and Basses to include mandolins, amplifiers, and even drum kits!

Originally conceived as a project for the NAMM Show, this initiative came to fruition in response to the call, “Is there anything we can do as Master Builders?” as events were canceled one after another due to the pandemic.
With the cooperation of the Gretsch Custom Shop, this has truly become a special collection.
By the way, “Green with Envy” is apparently an idiom meaning “to be so envious that one turns green with jealousy.”

A collaboration with Mattel, the company famous for those miniature cars!

Hot Wheels Collection

This collaboration with global toy manufacturer Mattel is a collection inspired by Hot Wheels die-cast mini cars.
Featuring each model’s distinctive color schemes, designs, and graphics, a total of 16 instruments were crafted by 11 master builders and 5 apprentice builders.
The pieces, adorned with the pop and cool graphics characteristic of Hot Wheels, are not only a dream come true for Hot Wheels fans but also showcase each builder’s sense of style and skill in translating the mini-car’s features onto guitars and basses—making the collection a real joy to browse!

Now that I’ve briefly introduced the collections from the past two years, let’s move on to the main topic: 2023!

2023
Made from reclaimed wood from California

California Streetwood Collection

The California Streetwood Collection was created in collaboration with Street Tree Revival.
Street Tree Revival is a company that runs a program to save trees destined for landfills. By recycling trees from urban forests—felled due to storms, disease, or old age—into lumber suitable for furniture and musical instruments, they contribute to environmental conservation and provide beautiful wood with unique stories behind each piece.
Drawing on Street Tree Revival’s expertise, each master builder carefully selected the wood. They created a total of 13 beautiful, one-of-a-kind guitar and Bass models that highlight the unique qualities and characteristics of these materials.

Among the woods used in this collection are many types that Fender does not typically work with—such as wood that was once part of beloved amusement park rides or wood harvested from local parks.
Additionally, there are Basses with a thin finish that allow you to enjoy the scent of the wood, as well as guitars featuring “yaki-sugi” (charred cedar), a traditional Japanese technique. The builders’ craftsmanship—which maximizes not only the visual beauty of the wood but also its unique characteristics—is a major highlight!

The California Streetwoods Roasted Ash & Elm P Bass NOS that has just arrived at our store is a single instrument crafted by master builder Jason Smith.
It’s a bass made with elm wood, a material truly befitting the Streetwoods name. Elm is known in Japanese as “Nire.” It’s a tree species familiar to Japanese people as a common street tree.

Like his other works, the design eschews flashy embellishments to fully showcase the wood’s natural beauty. While based on the classic Precision Bass shape, it incorporates several modern updates, creating an instrument that seamlessly blends the beauty of the wood, Fender’s tradition, and contemporary functional aesthetics.

Master Builder Jason Smith

Jason Smith joined the Custom Shop in 1995.
Having been exposed to the Fender culture from a young age through his father’s work as a Fender employee, it was only natural for him to join the company.
He apprenticed under the late, legendary Senior Master Builder John English for five years and was promoted to Master Builder in 2006.

Combined with the fact that he is a Bass player himself, he is a builder who enjoys the particularly strong trust of Bassists like Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)!
This California Streetwoods Roasted Ash & Elm P Bass NOS is a piece that blends modern and traditional elements—a signature style of Jason Smith, who has worked on everything from modern to traditional models.
