Surf Green with Envy Collection

Surf Green with Envy Collection

This collection featured each builder selecting specifications from a specific year and finishing everything in Surf Green.
Not only guitars, but also mandolins, amplifiers, and drum kits were developed!

Originally planned for the NAMM SHOW, this project came to fruition in response to the call, "As master builders, isn't there something we can do?" amid the cancellation of events due to the pandemic.
With the cooperation of the Gretsch Custom Shop, this truly is a special collection.
Incidentally, "Green with Envy" is an idiom meaning "to be so jealous that you turn green."

2022
A collaboration with Mattel, famous for those miniature cars!

Hot Wheels Collection

A collaboration with global toy manufacturer Mattel, this collection is inspired by Hot Wheels die-cast mini cars.
Featuring each model's distinctive color schemes, designs, and graphics, a total of 16 pieces were crafted by 11 master builders and 5 apprentice builders.
The pieces, adorned with Hot Wheels' signature pop and cool graphics, are naturally coveted by Hot Wheels fans. But what makes viewing the collection truly enjoyable is seeing each builder's sense and skill in translating the characteristics of the mini cars into guitars!

Now, after briefly introducing the past two years' collections , let's get to the main topic: 2023!

California Streetwood,

made with reclaimed wood from California

The California Streetwood Collection was born in collaboration with Street Tree Revival.
Street Tree Revival is a company that operates a program to save trees destined for landfill. It recycles urban forest trees felled due to storms, disease, or old age into usable lumber for furniture, instruments, and more, contributing to environmental conservation while providing beautiful wood with unique stories.
Drawing on Street Tree Revival's expertise, each master builder meticulously selected the wood. This resulted in 13 beautiful, one-of-a-kind guitars and Bass that highlight the unique qualities and characteristics of these woods.

The wood used in the collection includes many types not typically used by Fender, such as wood that was once part of beloved amusement park attractions or wood sourced from local parks.
Additionally, by applying a thin finish, some Bass allow you to enjoy the wood's natural scent, while others feature traditional Japanese techniques like yakisugi (charred cedar). The builders' skills, which maximize not only the wood's visual beauty but also its inherent characteristics, are a major highlight!

The California Streetwoods Roasted Ash & Elm P Bass NOS recently arrived at our store is a single piece crafted by master builder Jason Smith.
It features elm wood, fitting the Streetwoods name. Elm is known as "Nire" in Japanese. It's a familiar type of tree for Japanese people too, often seen as a street tree.

Like his other creations, this design avoids flashy embellishments, fully showcasing the wood's inherent beauty. Centered around the shape of the original Precision Bass, it incorporates several modern updates, blending the wood's beauty with Fender tradition and contemporary functional aesthetics.

Master Builder Jason Smith

Jason Smith joined the Custom Shop in 1995.
Having been exposed to his father's work at Fender from a young age, he absorbed the Fender culture and naturally joined the company.
He apprenticed for five years under the late, legendary Senior Master Builder John English, becoming a Master Builder himself in 2006.

Being a Bass player himself, he's a builder who earns particularly deep trust from bassists like Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)!
This California Streetwoods Roasted Ash & Elm P Bass NOS is a quintessential Jason Smith creation, blending modern and traditional elements—a hallmark of his work spanning both contemporary and classic models
