Column: “Exploring the History and Full Scope of Rare Colors—Gibson Acoustic Vintage Rare Color History”
When it comes to Gibson acoustic guitars, what immediately comes to mind for most people is Sunburst,
or perhaps a natural finish. These are the classic, undisputed standards.
However, lurking in the shadows of that long history are certainly colors that stand out—such as black and red.
Why were they created?
At Advance Guitars, we’ve handled numerous vintage Gibsons, including the J-45.
Among them, rare color variants like Ebony Black and Cherry Red occasionally make an appearance.
Drawing on our experience dealing with these rare instruments, we wrote this column with the intention of not only covering representative rare colors but also—by digging up historical records, photos, and data to the greatest extent possible—visually and systematically compiling information on “phantom colors” that were thought to exist only in archives.
Why were those colors chosen?
Rather than simply repeating conventional wisdom, I’ve handled the actual instruments myself and
examined the details to uncover the “still-unresolved background of their creation,”
incorporating my own insights to a large extent.
I aimed for depth as a read—not just a list of catalog specifications—that conveys the atmosphere of the time and the manufacturer’s trial and error.
And just like the J-45 article, this piece isn’t finished yet.
Rare-color models are once-in-a-lifetime finds.
Going forward, every time a new rare-color model arrives at Advance Guitars or new facts come to light, this record will be updated and grow into an even more comprehensive archive.
