This is the original RAT large box, released in 1979, marked FILTER!
The Rat features a filter control labeled "TONE" (which worked the opposite way to the current one!) that has been changed to the familiar "FILTER" designation for the RAT. This unit is from the final period of the large-case model, just before the change to the small-case model known as the RAT I (the very first models had a black and white inverted logo!). The rugged and simple body exudes a unique atmosphere.
The op amp has consistently been the LM308N, from its inception through to the RAT II around 2000. While Motorola LM308Ns have also been used since the RAT I, the large-case model seems to have been exclusively made by National Semiconductor. While the basic design remains the same, differences in tone and texture can be felt throughout the decades. Compared to the RAT I from the late 1980s, the distortion has a slightly more subtle texture and a smoother sound. Even legendary guitarist Jeff Beck has been using this model since the large-case model was introduced. The battery holder, which is often missing, is still included, and of course, the powerful sound is outstanding! This model is now rarely seen, both in Japan and overseas.
