Do music stores have a lot of overtime?

Job Description

Choosing a career is a major life decision, and we’re grateful that you’re interested in working at a music store. However, we understand that deciding to turn your passion into a career can bring many worries and uncertainties. I still vividly remember the anxiety I felt when
I was considering switching to a music store myself.

Many people want to work at a music store but wonder, “What exactly does the job entail?” So, I’d like to give you a sense of what it’s like to work at the TCGAKKI Group.

To put it simply, your main duties will involve customer service related to buying and selling musical instruments, as well as handling online sales. You’ll also handle related tasks such as product photography, posting content online, and updating social media.

Our job is to help enhance our customers’ musical lives through the buying and selling of musical instruments.

Are there sales quotas?

There’s a common perception that music stores have sales quotas, and if you don’t meet them, you might face pay cuts or even be forced to buy products yourself (a practice known as “self-sacrificing sales”)—
which can be unsettling… Surprisingly, many people seem to feel this way. I was actually anxious about this myself when I was considering a career change.
But rest assured—that’s not how things work at the TCGAKKI Group. Of course
, as a company, we set goals and it’s essential that we strive to achieve them, but we never force employees into “self-sacrificing sales” to meet those targets. I was
also worried that working in this field might make me lose my love for musical instruments… but that turned out to be an unnecessary concern. I could
tell my senior colleagues truly love instruments—they talk about them even outside of work—and my own collection of instruments at home is steadily growing.

Do music stores have a lot of overtime?

I think there’s a common perception that working at a music store means few days off and a lot of overtime. In fact, I once heard from an
acquaintance who works at a certain music store about the harsh reality there: overtime is the norm, it’s hard to take time off, and they even have to work every day during the New Year’s sales.

TCGAKKI, however, there’s almost no overtime. We place a high priority on “finishing
work within the allotted time,” and every staff member plans their day with the expectation of leaving at 8:20 PM, which is the end of the workday. While there are occasional requests
for overtime—such as when events or photo shoots require working outside regular hours—these are rare. In fact, if you stay late on your own, you’ll likely get scolded by a senior colleague with a “Go home already!”

We schedule shifts so that everyone gets two days off per week—on Wednesdays, which is our regular day off, and on a day assigned to each staff member. We also typically have four days off during the New Year’s holiday. It might be unusual for a music store to have the New Year’s holiday off. I’m very happy that I can go to the
first shrine visit of the year with my family every New Year’s, and all our staff members are able to truly cherish their personal time.

Will Recruit be Recruit if I don’t have knowledge or experience?

I’m sure many of you are worried that you won’t even be Recruit without specialized knowledge or experience with musical instruments. However, what we’re looking for—more than knowledge or experience—is someone who takes their work seriously and can adapt flexibly as part of a team.
Knowledge is necessary, but time will take care of that. Our senior staff will teach you everything from scratch, and we have a comprehensive training program for customer service, so please rest assured. In fact, I joined the company with no prior experience and learned everything from there.

Of course, we also welcome experienced candidates. If you’re currently working at a competitor and considering a career change, please feel free to contact us. You’ll be surprised at just how different it is to work for a different company.
