Martin / 1976 D-35
For those who want a rosewood model different from the D-28!
In 1965, a dreadnought appeared that featured the same spruce/rosewood combination as the D-28 but with a different construction. That instrument was the D-35. Let's explore how it differs from the D-28.
- Three-piece back construction with a rosewood body
The D-35 differs visually from the D-28 in its rosewood sides and back. While the D-28 uses a two-piece back, the D-35 features a three-piece construction. This design was conceived due to the depletion of Brazilian rosewood (Hacalanda) used for bodies at the time. This model employs Indian rosewood, producing a rich, deep bass and beautifully resonant, expansive highs distinct from the D-28.
The top features finely grained spruce. The white celluloid binding and purfling are identical to the D-28's specifications.
Ebony is used for the fingerboard, showcasing its bright-toned grain. White mother-of-pearl dot position markers are inlaid, and white celluloid binding—not found on the D-28—adorns the fingerboard sides.
The neck is made of mahogany with a moderately thick profile that leans slightly toward a V-shape. It offers a comfortable grip without feeling awkward. It features a square rod truss rod.
The bridge, like the fingerboard, is made of ebony and features a short saddle.
The headstock features the clean, angular shape characteristic of the 70s. It bears the C.F. Martin decal logo.
It is equipped with GROVER 102 tuners (without PAT stamp). A characteristic feature is that models without the PAT stamp were introduced starting in the late 70s.
The non-scalloped bracing suppresses excessive resonance, delivering a well-balanced output of the depth and brightness inherent in spruce and rosewood. For those seeking a rosewood guitar distinct from the D-28, the D-35 is a model we highly recommend considering.

The D-28 offers a different kind of richness and dynamic range—a sound unique to its 3P back construction. Even during the square rod era, its playability is outstanding!
