Gibson flat-top acoustic guitars share the spotlight with Martin, commanding overwhelming presence and popularity. Emerging through trial and error despite wartime hardships, their legendary models embody the very history of flat-top guitars.
Among them, the Jumbo 200, nicknamed the "King of Flat-Tops," radiates a special aura as a particularly high-end model.

The Gibson Super Jumbo was born in 1937.Its origins trace back to a meeting between cowboy star Ray Whitley and Gibson's Guy Hart at Madison Square Garden's rodeo arena. Ray proposed, "I want you to build a guitar with a super funky, super country design." The Super Jumbo was born from this request. It was subsequently embraced by Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and Jimmy Wakeley, quickly becoming a popular model in Gibson's flat-top lineup. Officially named the "Super Jumbo 200" due to its $200 price tag at the time, the SJ-200 saw approximately 100 units produced by 1942.

Re-released as the "J-200" starting in 1946 after the war. A major feature is that while the pre-war models had rosewood sides and back, the post-war models featured maple (only two custom-order maple side and back models were produced before the war).Additionally, a natural finish appeared in '48, the peghead received a single-layer cell binding, and from '49 onward, the body thickness increased from 4 1/2 inches to 4 2/3 inches, then to 4 7/8 inches in '52, and finally to 5 inches by the mid-1960s.
The "Jumbo 200," beloved not only by country musicians but also by legendary artists like Elvis Presley and Keith Richards, continues to reign as an eternal Gibson premium model.
Today, the Gibson Custom Shop is produced by the Montana Factory team led by Master Luthier Ren Ferguson. For the 100th anniversary in 1994, Luthier Ren and then-Custom Luthier John Walker teamed up to unveil several flat-top acoustic guitars with unprecedented, ultra-luxurious specifications. While Gibson had previously seemed to concede the ground to Martin in terms of luxurious, high-end inlays, the SJ-200 100th Anniversary models introduced here are exceptional pieces boasting a powerful impact, originality, and a sense of luxury. We urge you to seize this opportunity to acquire one of these world-exclusive, supreme items.
