Gibson flat-top acoustic guitars rival Martin in popularity and command an overwhelming presence and following. Having weathered the harsh conditions of wartime and emerged after much trial and error, the numerous iconic models that followed truly embody the history of the flat-top itself.
Among them, the Jumbo 200—nicknamed the "King of Flat-Tops"—exudes a particularly special aura as a top-tier model.

The Gibson Super Jumbo was born in 1937.The Super Jumbo was born when cowboy star Ray Whitley and Gibson’s Guy Hart met at the Madison Square Garden rodeo arena, and Ray proposed, “I want you to build a guitar with a super funky, super country design.” It was subsequently favored by famous country singers such as Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and Jimmy Wackley, and it quickly became a popular model in the Gibson flat-top lineup. The SJ-200, officially named the “Super Jumbo 200” after its list price of $200 at the time, was produced in a run of about 100 units between 1939 and 1942.

It was re-released as the "J-200" in 1946, following the war. A major difference was that while the pre-war models featured rosewood sides and back, the post-war models were made with maple (only two maple-sided and -backed models had been produced via custom order prior to the war).In 1948, a natural finish was introduced, and the headstock was given a single-layer celluloid binding. From 1949 onward, the body thickness increased from 4 1/2 inches to 4 2/3 inches, reaching 4 7/8 inches in 1952 and 5 inches by the mid-1960s.
The "Jumbo 200," which continued to be favored not only by country musicians but also by legendary artists such as Elvis Presley and Keith Richards, still reigns today as Gibson’s timeless flagship model.
Currently, the Gibson Custom Shop is produced by the Montana Factory team led by Master Luthier Ren Ferguson. For the 100th anniversary in 1994, Len teamed up with John Walker, the Custom Luthier at the time, to release several flat-top acoustic guitars with unprecedented, ultra-luxurious specifications. While Gibson had previously seemed to lag slightly behind Martin in terms of luxurious, high-end inlays, the 100th Anniversary SJ-200 models featured here are a collection of masterpieces that boast a powerful impact, originality, and a sense of luxury. We urge you to take this opportunity to acquire one of these one-of-a-kind, exquisite instruments.
