Gibson flat-top acoustic guitars rival Martin in popularity, enjoying an overwhelming presence and popularity. Having overcome the harsh conditions of wartime, the numerous iconic models that emerged after much trial and error can truly be said to represent the history of the flat-top guitar itself.
Among them, the Jumbo 200, nicknamed the "King of Flat Tops," exudes a special aura befitting a top-of-the-line model.
The Gibson Super Jumbo was born in 1937. It originated when Gibson's Guy Hart met with cowboy star Ray Whitley at the Madison Square Garden rodeo venue and Whitley suggested creating a guitar with a "super funky, super country design." The Super Jumbo was subsequently adopted by famous country singers such as Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and Jimmy Wakeley, and quickly became a popular model in the Gibson flat-top lineup. In 1939, the SJ-200 was officially named the "Super Jumbo 200," derived from its then-list price of $200, and approximately 100 units were produced by 1942.

The "J-200" was re-released in 1946 after the war. A major difference is that while the pre-war model had rosewood sides and back, the post-war model features maple (only two models with maple sides and back were produced as custom orders before the war). Also, in 1948, a natural color was introduced, the peg head became single cell binding, and from 1949 onwards, the body thickness increased from 4 1/2 inches to 4 2/3 inches, then to 4 7/8 inches in 1952, and finally to 5 inches in the mid-1960s.
The Gibson Jumbo 200, which was later used not only by country musicians but also by legendary artists such as Elvis Presley and Keith Richards, continues to reign as an eternal top-of-the-line Gibson model.
