I’ve been thinking, “I really want a Precision,” for a while now, and maybe because I’ve been thinking about it so much, we’ve just received several 1970s Precision basses!!
Actually, this exact same thing happened exactly one year ago (lol).
A year has passed since then, and we’ve received three new ones in stock, plus two that were brought back to our store for trade-in by customers who had previously purchased them from us—making a total of five!
They’re from ’72, ’74, ’76, ’78, and ’78—
and each one has different specs, so the sounds are completely different.
First, let me introduce all the specifications at once.
I don’t think you can judge the sound based on weight alone, but I’m listing it here because it’s a handy reference point for comparison!
1972 Fender PRECISION BASS ¥990,000 (tax included)
The popular white finish!
It features an alder body and a rosewood fingerboard.
Even though it’s alder, it weighs 4.5 kg!
1974 Fender PRECISION BASS ¥440,000 (tax included)
A natural-finish model!
Features an alder body and rosewood fingerboard.
This one is lightweight at 3.9 kg!
1976 Fender PRECISION BASS ¥550,000 (tax included)
Sunburst finish with a black pickguard!
Features an ash body and rosewood fingerboard.
Weighing in at 4.6 kg, this is a classic ’70s-style ash bass.
1978 Fender PRECISION BASS ¥495,000 (tax included)
Natural finish with a black pickguard!
Features an ash body and rosewood fingerboard.
This one weighs 4.73 kg—the heaviest of the models featured here!

Although it’s also from 1978, this one features an ash body and a maple fingerboard.
It weighs 4.66 kg. This is the only one in this lineup with a maple fingerboard!
I think the difference in character between the early and late 70s is very clear this time around!
