~Instrument Storage Tips from an Acoustic Guitar Specialist~ Is It Actually Dangerous? Common Mistakes in Acoustic Guitar Storage

Hello.
I’m Inoue, the store manager at Advance Guitars.
Mornings and evenings have gotten noticeably cooler, and it’s about time to start thinking about bringing out the heaters and humidifiers.
For acoustic guitars, the coming season is a time of year that requires extra care.
So this time, I’d like to address the second most common question we receive after “Should I loosen the strings?”
To put it bluntly...
What’s the right way to store an acoustic guitar?
“Isn’t it safe to just keep it in a sturdy hard case?”
“Which is better—a stand or wall mounting?”
“What specific temperature and humidity levels should I aim for?”
...and so on.
In fact, hidden among these are cases where actions taken with good intentions actually end up damaging the guitar.
For example, “leaving it in a hard case all the time.”
At first glance, this might seem like the safest option, but having examined tens of thousands of used and vintage guitars over the years, we’ve seen many cases where this led to unexpected problems.
That’s why we’ve published a column in our store’s music magazine that takes an in-depth look at how to store acoustic guitars.
Points to watch out for with hard cases, stands, and wall mounts.
“Places to avoid” that are surprisingly easy to overlook.
The temperature and humidity control standards we actually follow at Advance Guitars.
Furthermore, for those who think, “What a store says isn’t really relevant,”
I’ll show you exactly how I, Inoue, store my guitar at home,
including a full, candid look at the humidifier and dehumidifier I use.
At the end of this column, I’ve also prepared a “Storage Checklist” you can start using right away.
I wrote this with the hope that it would serve as a guide to help you protect your cherished instruments as we head into the upcoming dry season.
Is your storage method safe? Be sure to check the main article to find out!
Viewing is free, of course, so I hope you’ll take your time to read through it.
