[ Features]
Selmer MARK VI Soprano Saxophone. Serial number 140,000s, manufactured in 1967.
What first catches the eye is the distinctive character of an instrument that has been played. The lacquer's discoloration, the peeling around the engraving and keys. This uneven patina quietly tells the story of its long history. Air flows smoothly, and the sound projects naturally forward. It possesses the lightness characteristic of a well-played instrument. Its charm lies not in being uniformly mellow, but in possessing a bright, lustrous projection in the upper register. The intonation balance is generally sound, though the ' ' (G) tends to be slightly sharp. This does not cause significant issues during performance.
On the other hand, operability is an unavoidable topic when discussing this model. The placement of the table keys and side keys feels different from the alto or tenor Mark VI, its design philosophy strongly reflecting an older era. It is far removed from modern ergonomics. It demands that the player adapt to the instrument.
Yet the reason it continues to be chosen lies, above all, in its sound.
A soft attack and the sensation of phrases organically blending together. A mid-low range combining sweetness with a solid core, and a high register that projects without thinning out. It possesses a distinct character that current models simply cannot replicate.
If you seek tonal allure and nuance—
—this MARK VI soprano remains unmatched.
