[Overview] Selmer Paris MARK VI (Mark Six), Soprano Saxophone, with engraved bell pattern. 140,000 series. Manufactured in 1967. Accessories: Original hard case from the time of sale in Japan (New) (serial number and year of manufacture written on the outside)
[Condition] Extensive discoloration of the lacquer finish due to age and use is evident. The lacquer has peeled off the keys and engraved areas. The screw-mounted lyre mount from the original New production has been removed, and a new ring-type strap mount has been installed in a well-balanced position (mounting marks remain). The thumb hook retaining screw is a non-genuine part. Overhauled and adjusted with internal cleaning and replacement of all pads (CHANU plastic resonators), corks, and felts.
[Features] Selmer MARK VI Soprano Saxophone. A 1967 model from the 140,000 series.
The first thing that catches the eye is the unique character of an instrument that has been played extensively. Discoloration of the lacquer, peeling around the engravings and keys—these uneven textures quietly tell the story of its long history. Air flows smoothly, and the sound projects naturally forward. It possesses a lightness characteristic of a well-played instrument. Rather than being solely mellow, this instrument’s charm lies in its bright, lustrous projection in the high register. The intonation is generally well-balanced—with the exception of a slight tendency for the ‘ G’ to run slightly high—and does not cause any major issues during performance.
On the other hand, playability is an unavoidable topic when discussing this model. The layout of the table and side keys feels different from that of the alto or tenor Mark VI, and its design philosophy retains a strong influence from an earlier era. It has little to do with modern ergonomics; it requires the player to adapt to the instrument.
Yet the reason it continues to be chosen lies, above all, in its sound. A soft attack and the sensation of phrases blending together organically. A mid-to-low register that combines sweetness with a solid core, and a high register that is bright yet never thin. It possesses a distinct character that cannot be replicated by current models.
If you seek sensuality and nuance in sound— this Mark VI soprano remains the only choice.
