K.Yairi / 1991 DY-35
K.Yairi is a domestic brand still crafted primarily by hand by artisans in their workshop in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture.
From design to wood selection, bracing, neck fitting, finishing, and final adjustments, each guitar is completed one by one under the watchful eye and skilled hands of the craftsmen.
This meticulous process manifests in the moment you play it, delivering a "lack of peculiar quirks" and "effortless feel."
While the DY series incorporates design elements inspired by the Martin D-35, its sonic character differs from Martin's.
It features an all-solid construction: spruce top, rosewood sides and back.
Though classically configured, its sound is tighter, avoiding unnecessary bloat, with a well-defined soundstage.
The sound doesn't spread excessively, allowing each note within a chord to separate cleanly.
Here, the essence of Japanese craftsmanship is vividly evident.
It's not a coarse sound, but a beautifully refined and well-organized one.
The longer you use a K.Yairi guitar, the more you tend to fall for it.
I believe this stems from its exceptionally high level of "perfection as a tool."
While overseas brands evoke a sense of romance, domestically crafted guitars made by such artisans possess their own unique charm.
They reliably stand by your music, and their value becomes clearer the more you play them.
[Staff Comment: Mochizuki]
As a guitar entirely distinct from the Martin D-35, it's a captivating model.
Unlike the Martin, which envelops the space, the K.Yairi has a sensation of projecting forward.
It's a satisfying instrument with a clear, distinct sound image.
