This model traces its origins back to before the war. In 1937, it is known that Gibson teamed up with Ray Whitley, a popular Western movie actor and singer, to develop the model. At the time, creating and releasing models named after popular movie actors was considered an effective way to promote new guitars. The ornate decoration and large body were likely designed to catch people's attention.
Since its release in 1938, it has been cherished by numerous musicians, including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones).
This particular guitar is a 1992 Montana factory model. This 30-year veteran, showing some checking in the finish, exudes a very dignified presence. Its sound features low end and sustain reminiscent of a rosewood body, rather than the crisp sound typical of maple. This guitar, which also gives a slight impression of a Martin Dreadnought, is easy to imagine performing exceptionally well in live recording sessions.
