"A vintage-feeling instrument that doesn't seem like it's from 1990"
The J-200 is a Gibson model known for its large 17-inch body. In 1951, the model name changed from SJ-200 to J-200. While undergoing various specification changes like pickguard design and tuning pegs, it gained immense popularity among artists including Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. This particular J-200 was made in 1990.
- A look reminiscent of the 1951 model
. The 17-inch jumbo body is made of spruce and finished in a two-tone sunburst reminiscent of the 1951 model. The bracing pattern is scalloped X-bracing.
The rosette features a double ring.
The pickguard is the signature J-200 large pickguard, featuring 12 mother-of-pearl dots and carved flowers and vines. The coloring also adopts the deep tortoiseshell type seen in 1951.
The sides and back are maple, featuring a burst finish that lightens toward the center. Subtle weather checking from aging adds a tasteful impression.
The back strip features a checkerboard pattern. This design is also seen on 1951 instruments.
The fingerboard is rosewood, featuring crown inlays of varying sizes from the low to high frets.
The neck features a 3P construction with rosewood sandwiched between maple layers, and the V-shaped neck is a unique specification for this particular instrument.
The iconic open moustache bridge of the J-200 is made of rosewood, with square-shaped pearl inlays adorning the bridge pins.
The large headstock, characterized by its sharp angles, is bound and features the Gibson modern logo and crown inlay, emphasizing its status as a higher-end model. The bell-shaped truss rod cover is a 2P design and has a chip on the top.
Keystone Rotomatic tuners with "GIBSON DELUXE" engraving are fitted. This adds a touch of modernity.
The 4th string peg shaft is bent, but rest assured it tunes perfectly fine.
Instruments from the 1990s are rarely seen on the market, and the J-200 is a particularly valuable piece. It has a crisp tone yet delivers powerful bass, making it a very satisfying instrument to play. Please give it a try.
