Martin / 1980 D-25K
"A rare piece even among Martin guitars"
When you think of dreadnoughts, iconic models like the D-28, D-18, and D-45 come to mind. But back in 1980, the Style 25 was crafted using Hawaiian koa for its body. The lineup at the time consisted of four models: the 00-25K, 00-25K2, D-25K, and D-25K2.
The 00-25K and D-25K featured Sitka spruce tops with Hawaiian koa sides and back.
The difference between the 00-25K2 and D-25K2 models is that both top and back/sides are made entirely of Hawaiian koa wood.
Manufactured from 1980 to 1989, only about 512 units were produced across all models, making this a rare piece.
This 1980 D-25K is one of the very first produced in its debut year.
While it shows signs of wear from years of playing, such as picking marks, and the tuning pegs have become slightly stiff due to aging, it remains in excellent overall condition.
Unlike the D-28 or D-18, it produces a beautiful sound with sparkling, brilliant highs within its low tones. Comparing its sound to the three models above might be an interesting way to appreciate the differences.
