Old kotsuzumi (kotsuzumi drum) body from the late Edo period, decorated with an unusual canna (kanna)
Old kotsuzumi (kotsuzumi) drum with lacquer maki-e box. It is believed to have been made in the late Edo period. The upper part of the body is decorated with "Hyakusoku Kanna" and the lower part with "Arashi Kanna". The kanna (carving) is also visible in the center of the sound pass-through. It is thought to have been made in Awa in the late Edo period. It weighs 497 grams. It is made of cherry wood core and has a firm weight.
Some of the lacquer has peeled off on the upper part of the nipple pouch, and the maki-e is floating and dotted with cracks. There is some floating of urushi lacquer around the outer edge of the leather mouth.
