[ : Features & Appeal]
A custom-made bass trombone crafted by Takao Nakagawa.
Since taking over the traditional Syhre workshop in Leipzig, Germany, in 2014, Mr. Nakagawa has garnered high praise from top European musicians for his unique philosophy and craftsmanship.
At the core of his instrument-making philosophy is the belief that “an instrument grows alongside the performer.” It is not merely a tool, but a “partner” that is perfected through a shared relationship.
This instrument is a one-off, custom-made model redesigned by Nakagawa based on the Bb/F/C system of Günter Frost, a virtuoso with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.
The instrument is primarily a Bb trombone.
While the left trigger shifts to the F tube—similar to a standard bass trombone—it also features a C-ascending rotary on the right side.
This allows—
the low C that is typically achieved in the 4th position on a standard double-rotary system can be played in the 1st position,
and the low B, which is usually played in the fifth position, can be played in just two positions.
The slide action is surprisingly natural, dramatically improving mobility in the low register without significantly altering the traditional positional feel.
Despite its compact design, the 230 mm bell produces a rich, resonant sound that projects with flexibility.
It projects a deep presence without getting lost even within a full orchestra.
It offers excellent playability and demonstrates high adaptability not only for bass players but also for tenor players switching instruments. It combines a rich, warm tone with practical functionality.
Design philosophy, playability, and the maker’s philosophy.
All of these elements are condensed into this one-of-a-kind, custom-made instrument.
It is an instrument that already possesses the qualities to become an “irreplaceable presence.”
