Originally released in 1962 as the premium model above the Hummingbird, the Dove. Compared to the Hummingbird sharing the same body, this model features premium specifications befitting its higher-end status, including body wood, pickguard design, and scale length. This instrument was released in 1998 as a Dove reflecting the characteristics of the 1960s. Let's examine the detailed specifications.
ーThe Dove's Signature Pickguard
The Square Shoulder features a large pickguard. The Dove boasts a mother-of-pearl dove inlay, along with carvings reminiscent of Rosa aciculata. Characteristically, the flowers are colored with red ink, the leaves with green ink, and the stamens and branches with yellow ink.
The 17-inch square shoulder is finished in a cherry sunburst reminiscent of its 1962 debut. It boasts a beautiful finish where the cherry appears to fade.
The rosette features the double ring characteristic of the 60s.
The sides and back feature beautiful flamed maple with striking grain patterns. The body edges are adorned with multicolored celluloid.
While Dove models typically lack a backstrip, this instrument features a checkerboard-pattern backstrip as decoration. This specification is one of the unique charms of this particular instrument.
The rosewood fingerboard features beautiful mother-of-pearl double parallelogram inlays.
The neck features a 5-piece construction with rosewood sandwiched between maple. While mahogany was used in the 60s, this incorporates elements from the 70s for an original approach. The flame maple used on the sides/back is also felt in the neck. The neck shape is closer to the original, featuring a thinner profile with a slightly flatter contour.
The large bridge uses rosewood, just like in the 60s. This model employs short saddles instead of a Tune-O-Matic. Dove-shaped decorations are added to the sides of the bridge.
The large headstock features Gibson's modern logo, complemented by a crown inlay that enhances its luxurious appearance. Additionally, it employs a bell-shaped truss rod cover with a dove engraving at its center.
GROVER 102N tuning machines are used. They provide smooth operation and stable tuning.
This instrument has been retrofitted with a HIGHLANDER IP-1 active pickup, making it equally at home on the street or in a live setting
. While individual variations exist in the original pickguard design, the design suggests a recreation of the 1963 or 1964 specification, featuring a branch without thorns where the dove is perched. This instrument faithfully reflects 60s characteristics, including the top's coloring, truss rod cover, rosette, and multicolor purfling. It's a rare piece packed with unique charm, like the playful back strip and neck style.
