The J-160E from the first year of the reissue, closer to the original.
Gibson / 1996 1964 J-160E
The 1964 J-160E is the guitar made famous by John Lennon.
The original is now a highly prized model commanding premium prices among 1960s Gibson flat-tops.
The model arriving this time is the 1996 reissue.
The J-160E was revived around 1990 following the factory move to Montana, but until 1995, it featured a solid top and X-bracing.
Then in 1996, specifications changed to a laminated top, ladder bracing, and an adjustable bridge, bringing it closer to the 1964 original.
The unit arriving this time is from the first year of these specification changes. With laminated body sides and top, and a solid back, it features a crisp, solid resonance and deep bass.
Even during cutting-style playing, the sound doesn't get muddy or fall apart. This is a unit we highly recommend for anyone wanting to strum an acoustic guitar with a crisp, clean sound.
Using a 0.60mm pick produces a crisp, clear resonance that I believe suits this instrument well.
The frets have been refretted with wider ones to match the original, and the fret height is significantly higher than the original.
The tuning machines have been replaced with Gotoh-made Kluson-style single-knob machines.
The saddle has also been replaced with one featuring a resin saddle mounted on a wooden frame.
I believe this instrument's charm truly comes through when played.
Since the J-160E is unlikely to be reissued as a new model today, it offers a look and sound you rarely encounter.
