"For those seeking a tone the New cannot produce..."
【D-18 / Dreadnought Style-18】 It is one of Martin's most iconic models, alongside the D-28, featuring a spruce top and mahogany back and sides. Beloved by musicians including Elvis Presley, Gordon Lightfoot, and Paul Simon, it delivers a versatile tone suitable for both pick and fingerstyle playing.
— A dreadnought adorned with black binding
The top is crafted from spruce, while black binding and multicolor purfling encircle the body, enhancing its sophisticated look.
It features non-scalloped X bracing.
The sides and back are crafted from quarter-sawn mahogany, adding the warmth and projection that are the hallmarks of the D-18's sound.
The fingerboard is rosewood with white dot position markers. Regarding the position markers, prior to 1990, only the 12th fret had two dots. Starting in 1990, both the 7th and 12th frets changed from one dot to two dots. The dot size at the 9th fret was also enlarged compared to the 1980 model.
The neck uses select hardwood, and the neck grip, with its moderate thickness, naturally fits comfortably in the hand. The neck features an adjustable rod, a design adopted around 1985. This allows the neck to be adjusted using a special wrench. In fact, some D-18 models from the 1990s featured a square rod specification. Since the square rod cannot be adjusted with a special wrench, this model is recommended for those wanting a D-18 with modern specifications.
The bridge is made of rosewood and features a short saddle.
The rosewood veneer headstock features an angular shape with a three-dimensional, gold-gloss Martin logo.
The tuning machines are Rotomatic tuners engraved with the Martin logo.
How about it? Though nearly 30 years old, this guitar is in beautiful condition, clearly well-cared for and played with respect. While the New Martin also produces a wonderful tone, this 30-year-old instrument delivers even greater dynamics and a more powerful sound.
