After Leo Fender left Fender in 1972, he founded Music Man. The StingRay was released by Music Man in 1976. As the instrument that introduced active basses to the world, it was the key player in that revolution. It remains a staple model today, continuing to be sold with only minor changes, retaining its original shape and style.
This particular unit features a three-point neck joint and a through-body bridge. The neck date is 1979, the body date is 1978, and the pots are from 1977-78. It has an ash body with a maple fingerboard. Its flat body shape without an elbow cut is characteristic, producing a powerful sound with clear, defined contours and distinct dynamics – a sound unique to the StingRay.
Controls consist of 1 Volume and 2-Band EQ, with the EQ offering only Bass/Treble boost. While its usability differs from current models with boost/cut EQ, its sound is distinct. It retains the StingRay's signature attack while also showcasing a woody resonance from over 40 years of aging. Boosting the EQ can create an aggressive sound!
A truly commanding instrument, with an overall amber-toned finish. A StingRay that catches anyone's eye with an "Oh!"
